Anne found the blue vervain growing where the earth had been scraped.
David had spent the previous spring building a swale — regrading a slope to slow the water coming off the road and orchard to the north of the lower pasture. The ground was disturbed, exposed, raw. They left the buffer zone between the road and the new swale alone, did not mow it, did not manipulate it. And in that space where the earth had been opened, blue vervain appeared — a native nerve tonic herb that Anne had been reading about and hoping to find on the property.
Harvest Balm is a whole-herb salve made from three plants we grow on our 131-acre farm in Catawissa, Pennsylvania: calendula, yarrow, and comfrey. Each herb is harvested by hand, dried, and slow-infused into a base of organic oil and grass-fed beef tallow. The balm also contains blue vervain, wild-foraged from that recovered stand on the property. No essential oils, no synthetic preservatives, no fragrance. The result is a dense, deeply nourishing salve that absorbs slowly and stays active on the skin for hours. One ounce lasts longer than you expect because a small amount covers a wide area.
Each herb in Harvest Balm was chosen for a specific function, and we formulate with the whole plant — not isolated extracts.
Calendula is the foundational soothing agent. We grow it on the farm and harvest the flower heads at peak bloom, when the resin is most concentrated. Calendula has been used for centuries to help calm irritated skin, support the skin's natural healing process, and reduce the appearance of redness. When infused as a whole herb into oil, the fat-soluble compounds — carotenoids, flavonoids, essential fatty acids — transfer directly into the product. This is fundamentally different from adding a few drops of calendula essential oil, which captures only the volatile aromatic compounds and leaves the nutrients behind.
Yarrow is an astringent herb that helps tighten and tone the skin. It grows wild across our pastures and along the creek banks. We harvest the flowering tops and dry them before infusion. Yarrow has a long history in traditional herbalism for supporting skin that has been compromised by dryness or exposure.
Comfrey is known traditionally as "knitbone" for its historical use in supporting tissue repair. The leaves contain allantoin, a compound that helps promote cell turnover. We grow comfrey deliberately as part of our farm's herb garden because it is also a powerful soil builder — the deep tap root mines minerals from the subsoil and makes them available to neighboring plants.
Blue vervain is the rarest ingredient. It is a native Pennsylvania nerve tonic that we wild-forage from a single stand on the property — the one that appeared where the ground was scraped.
How We Make It
We formulate Harvest Balm in small batches on the farm. The process begins months before the balm is poured.
In growing season, Anne harvests each herb at the point when its beneficial compounds are most concentrated — calendula when the flowers are fully open and sticky with resin, yarrow when the flowering tops are in full bloom, comfrey when the leaves are large and deep green. The herbs are dried slowly to preserve their properties, then placed into organic carrier oil for a slow infusion that takes weeks, not hours.
This is not a heated extraction or a machine process. The herbs sit in oil, and time does the work. The fat-soluble nutrients — the carotenoids, the flavonoids, the allantoin — migrate into the oil gradually. When the infusion is complete, Anne strains the spent plant material and combines the infused oil with rendered grass-fed beef tallow. The tallow is sourced externally from a trusted supplier of 100% grass-fed beef — it does not come from our sheep. Grass-fed tallow is biocompatible with human skin, meaning its fatty acid profile closely matches the oils your skin produces naturally.
The final balm is poured into jars by hand. No essential oils are added. The scent you notice is the herbs themselves.
How to Use It
Apply Harvest Balm to dry, cracked, or irritated skin anywhere on the body. A small amount — about the size of a pea — is enough for both hands. The balm is dense, so it warms between your fingers before spreading.
For dry, cracked hands: Work the balm into knuckles, cuticles, and any areas where the skin splits in cold weather. Apply before bed and let it absorb overnight.
For eczema-prone skin: Apply to affected areas after bathing, when the skin is still slightly damp. The tallow base helps seal in moisture while the herbs work on the skin's surface.
For rough elbows, heels, or knees: Use a slightly larger amount and massage in until fully absorbed.
For minor skin irritation: Apply a thin layer directly to the area. The calendula and comfrey help support the skin's natural recovery process.
Harvest Balm is not a light lotion — it is a working salve designed for skin that needs real help.
Harvest Balm was made for people whose skin takes a beating. Farmers whose hands crack in January. Anyone managing eczema flares who has tried every drugstore cream and found them temporary at best. People who work outdoors, wash their hands constantly, or live in climates where winter air strips moisture from exposed skin. It is also for anyone who has reacted to conventional "natural" skincare products and suspects the essential oils or synthetic fragrances were the problem. Because Harvest Balm contains no essential oils and no fragrance, there is nothing concentrated enough to cause a reaction.
Why Ours Is Different
Most herbal salves on the market start with purchased extracts or essential oils mixed into a petroleum or plant-oil base. The herbs are not grown by the people who make the product. The label says "calendula" or "comfrey" but the connection between the plant and the salve is indirect — someone grew it, someone else processed it, a third party mixed it, and a brand put its name on it.
Harvest Balm is different because there is no supply chain. The calendula grows in our herb garden. The yarrow grows in our pastures. The comfrey grows beside our greenhouse. The blue vervain grows wild in a stand that appeared after David built a swale. Anne harvests them, dries them, infuses them, and pours the balm herself. The only ingredient we source externally is the grass-fed tallow, and we know exactly where it comes from.
Morgan had been managing eczema with conventional treatments for years before trying Harvest Balm. After consistent use, she noticed a meaningful difference in the comfort and appearance of her skin. Her experience is one reason we keep making this product exactly the way we do — no shortcuts, no substitutions.

About The Herbs
Comfrey
Comfrey contains allantoin, a compound herbalists value for promoting comfort and supporting skin's resilience, particularly in areas of dryness or rough texture. Traditionally used in folk medicine for bruises, sprains, and very dry skin. Important note: herbalists recommend using comfrey only on intact skin, not on deep or puncture wounds. *
Calendula
The anti-inflammatory companion. Calendula's vibrational essence exudes healing light—its golden flowers are infused whole into the oil to support inflamed skin and promote comfort for minor irritations. *
Yarrow
Yarrow is named for the Greek hero Achilles, who legend says used it to support his soldiers' recovery—a testament to its long history in traditional wound care. Herbalists value yarrow for its astringent properties, traditionally using it to support skin that needs toning and tightening, or for helping balance oil production in combination skin. *
